While Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal stands by his words against head coach Mickey Arthur, he has admitted that he might have been wrong in approaching the matter in the manner he did – a public outburst in a fiery press conference last month. In his response to the second show-cause notice issued by a three-man PCB committee, Akmal said he wasn’t aware his actions were a breach of the players’ code. The tone of Akmal’s response was significantly more conciliatory than earlier statements he had made on the subject. In a vague explanation, Akmal wrote that he “unaware” about any breach of code, and did what he did “unintentionally in the heat of the moment”. A source close to the player confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the batsman still held his ground about his claims about Arthur but “regretted” going to the media to talk about his fallout with the coach. The committee was formed to probe Akmal’s allegations that the head coach had used abusive language with him. The claims are yet to be verified, but the PCB found him to be in breach of its code of conduct despite being a non-contracted player. According to one of the committee members, Amjad Hussain – who is the PCB’s media director – players who are not centrally contracted with the PCB but are part of the domestic circuit are still compelled to follow the players’ code of conduct which is enforced at every level.Akmal had promised to apologise to Arthur should the committee find him guilty, but also made it clear he expected the same from Arthur if the verdict was in his favour. Calling himself a national cricketer who had “produced excellent results for Pakistan”, he said that the law did not allow any person to hurt the feelings and self-respect of another individual. He concluded by expressing full faith in the PCB to resolve the matter efficiently, as it was one “of respect, dignity and pride of Pakistan and its nation”.

Broad and Pattinson serve notice of Nottinghamshire's intent

Stuart Broad and James Pattinson represent as formidable an opening attack as has taken the field at Grace Road for some little time, and Nottinghamshire’s international pairing duly prospered

ECB Reporters Network07-Apr-2017
ScorecardStuart Broad and James Pattinson represent as formidable an opening attack as has taken the field at Grace Road for some little time, and Nottinghamshire’s international pairing duly prospered as the visitors ended the first day of their opening County Championship match of the season in a strong position against Leicestershire. The fact that early morning sunshine had been replaced by heavy grey cloud made Notts’ skipper Chris Read’s decision to exercise the away team’s right to bowl first an easy one, and Broad made an immediate breakthrough, though good fortune was a factor as Paul Horton tried to leave his sixth delivery only for the ball to clip the inside edge and cannon on to leg stump.Pattinson, making his championship debut, then produced a quick delivery to trap Colin Ackermann leg before, the ball seaming back just enough to beat the South African’s defensive push, and former Leicestershire left-armer Harry Gurney pressed home the advantage. Teenage opener Harry Dearden had batted solidly in going to 12, but fenced at a delivery just outside off stump to edge a catch behind.Gurney picked up his second wicket when an inswinger knocked Mark Pettini’s off stump out of the ground, and though Lewis Hill looked in good touch, hitting five boundaries in racing to 24, Pattinson’s return saw him steer a short, wide delivery in the over before lunch straight to point. Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove, watching on 40 not out, was not impressed. The clouds were beginning to clear when Ned Eckersley was beaten for pace and leg before to Broad. Cosgrove brought up his fifty, including nine fours, off 70 balls, but soon afterwards drove at a Broad delivery and edged a catch behind to Chris Read. Read’s 1,000th first class catch was a suitably outstanding effort, picked up low and tumbling to his left.Zak Chappell batted well to reach 30 before edging to second slip, but Ben Raine was joined by Clint McKay, and with conditions improving with every passing hour, the ninth-wicket pair dug in, compiling a partnership of 81.Had Ackermann not dropped Michael Lumb at second slip off Chappell on 0, shortly after the promising Chappell had dismissed Greg Smith, Leicestershire would have finished the day with their tails up. As it was, for all the Foxes’ tail wagged, the Notts batsmen will relish the prospect of building a big first-innings score on what looks a very good track.”They’ll be the happiest,” Leicestershire’s Rain admitted at the close. “It’s a very good pitch, and we wanted a lot more than that to be honest. I felt I was playing a pretty scrappy knock, I was hitting it like a toilet really, but I know we had to get up to somewhere around 250, it would be something to bowl at.”Zak [Chappell] and Clint [McKay] played very positively, and we scraped up to a total that keeps us in the game. There’s something there if we bowl well, and if we can hit them hard in the morning we will still be in it.””I think we’d have taken 251 beforehand, though we got ourselves into a really good position early,” said Read. “The ball seemed to go a bit soft and they put up some stiff resistance lower down the order.”I can see James [Pattinson] getting a fair few wickets for us – he bowls full, he swings it and he bowls a really lively pace.”

Gregory's maiden hundred frustrates Middlesex title defence

Reigning Specsavers county champions Middlesex appear on course for their fourth successive draw of an uninspired Division One title defence after Somerset enjoyed the best of a sun-kissed second day at Lord’s.As the Middlesex bowlers endured a wicketless morning session, centuries by Dean Elgar and Lewis Gregory allowed the visitors to bat on until well after tea before their declaration on 443 for nine.In the 22 remaining overs of an extended 104-over day that helped make up for Friday’s rain delays, Middlesex went in at stumps to reach the mid-point of the match on 42 without loss – a first innings deficit of 401. Their openers, Nick Compton and Nick Gubbins, endured a stern test to finish unscathed on 19 and 21 respectively.Somerset were indebted to a record sixth-wicket stand between Elgar and Gregory which rescued their side from the depths of 80 for six to the undoubted riches of four batting bonus points.Elgar crunched a season-best 158 while Gregory, in hitting 137, sailed past his previous best – an unbeaten 73 scored against Yorkshire at Headingley last season – to post his maiden first-class century in his 78th innings. The hosts spurned their one and only pre-lunch opportunity whilst gifting a life to Gregory with his score on 31. Fencing at a lifting delivery from Toby Roland-Jones, the right-hander was downed, one-handed at second slip by Ollie Rayner who, moving late to his right, appeared to lose the ball in the backdrop.Soon afterwards, Gregory rubbed salt in Middlesex wounds by plundering consecutive, cover-driven boundaries against Roland-Jones to move to an attractive 84-ball 50 with 10 fours.Elgar, the South Africa Test batsman, posted his second century of the season with a straight six against off-spinner Rayner. The left-hander danced down the pitch to deposit one over the Nursery End ropes and reach the milestone from 186 balls and with 15 fours to go with his maximum. It was the 31st first-class hundred of his career and his first at Lord’s.The pair saw off the second new ball and batted on after lunch to take their side beyond 300. In doing so they created a new sixth-wicket record for Somerset against Middlesex, beating the 196 scored by Peter White and Maurice Tremlett at Bath in 1959.Gregory marched on to secure his maiden first-class hundred with a leg glance against Tom Helm that flew to the ropes in front of the Pavilion. He punched the air, fist-bumped with Elgar and embraced his partner before holding his bat aloft to receive the acclaim for his 186-ball century which included 15 fours. The duo added 249 before Middlesex bagged their first wicket in 70 overs’ play by ending Elgar’s six-and-three-quarter-hour vigil. It needed a beauty to do so – a James Franklin leg-cutter from the Nursery End that held its own against the Lord’s slope to feather the edge and give John Simpson his fourth catch of the match.Gregory added a further 47 in tandem with Josh Davey but finally went after 333 minutes at the crease. Aiming to pull a length ball from Roland-Jones, he top-edged to long leg where Tom Helm pocketed the skier. Gregory faced 231 balls for a score that included 17 fours and a six.Davey muscled a cameo 47 against his former club before top-edging a pull to midwicket to give Helm a second scalp, then Jamie Overton (37) skied to long-on to be caught by 12th man James Harris.Substituting for Roland-Jones, Harris – who has returned from a second rolling-loan stint with Kent – made good ground running in from the ropes for Rayner’s sole wicket of the innings as Somerset declared nine down at 5.10pm. Tim Murtagh, Roland-Jones, Helm and Franklin all claimed two wickets apiece for the weary Middlesex attack.

Charles smashes 105 to take Rangpur into BPL final

Johnson Charles and Brendon McCullum smashed 151 runs, putting together the season’s highest partnership, to secure their spot in the BPL final on Tuesday against Dhaka Dynamites

Rangpur Riders made it to their first BPL final after completing a 36-run win over group-stage leaders Comilla Victorians in the match that spanned two days. Johnson Charles struck his maiden T20 century while Brendon McCullum made his first big contribution in the tournament to overpower a strong Comilla attack. It will be the fourth time in the final for Mashrafe Mortaza, who led Dhaka Gladiators and Comilla to BPL titles in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He finished the game off with a superb running catch off the last ball, underlining his contribution as more than just that of team captain. On Monday, Rangpur added 137 runs in their remaining 13 overs, after their overnight score of 55 for 1. Charles, who had already struck four sixes on Monday, hit seven in total apart from the nine boundaries in his unbeaten 63-ball 105. McCullum was far more aggressive, hammering nine sixes and just a single four in his 46-ball 78. The duo added 151 runs – a BPL record for the second wicket, the highest partnership for the season and the third-highest partnership in BPL history.Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das started well for Comilla but Rangpur applied the brakes in the second half of their innings. They were eventually bowled out for 156, losing regular wickets in the middle overs.McCullum finally comes to the partyHaving averaged just 15.20 this season before the match, it was only a matter of time before McCullum found his groove in the BPL. It began in the 10th over when he blew Graeme Cremer straight down the ground for his first six.Charles gave Mohammad Saifuddin the same treatment in the 13th over, hammering him over long off and square-leg. Cremer bowled four decent deliveries in the 14th over before McCullum launched him square on the leg-side and over cover for consecutive sixes to tear the Zimbabwe captain apart.McCullum came into his own in the next five overs, hitting six more sixes. First, Al-Amin Hossain was smeared flat over extra cover. Hasan Ali, Comilla’s best bowler in the day, was slogged over long-on before McCullum unloaded three sixes off Al-Amin once again in the 17th over. He didn’t hit it well on two of those occasions, but still managed to clear the ropes comfortably. After adding one more maximum in the 19th over, McCullum perished off the final ball for 78.A first for CharlesCharles rode out the anticipation for his first T20 ton with three boundaries in the final over. The second, a guide past point, got him to the three-figure mark. The last one was a blast past the umpire and non-striker, as Comilla breathed a huge sigh of relief that the onslaught was at least over. His highest T20 score before this was 92, and he bettered that by 13 more as he finished unbeaten.Tamim, Liton help Comilla fly offLiton Das’ six over midwicket in the first over signaled Comilla’s intent about chasing the 193-run target. Tamim then smacked Rubel for a six in the third over in which Tamim and Liton survived two run-out attempts in the same delivery. The result: four overthrows, as Rangpur looked a little too excited in the field during the Powerplay overs. Despite losing Tamim, Imrul Kayes and Shoaib Malik, Comilla remained on course till the half-way mark; with ten overs to go, they needed a further 110 runs.Rangpur slows Comilla downThe ball after Malik’s dismissal, Liton struck Nazmul Islam for a straight six but the left-arm spinner conceded just four runs in his next over to put the pressure right back on Comilla. It yielded a wicket in the next over when Liton fell caught behind for 39.Rangpur stopped the boundary hitting from overs 10.2 to 14.4, before Buttler struck his first six, a massive hit over long on. He added a second in the next over, off Mashrafe, struck straight this time. But Marlon Samuels remained frustrated at the other end with umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri who failed to spot two wides in the 17th over. It was a crucial over as Isuru Udana conceded only four runs, leaving a mountain to climb for Comilla at the death.Bopara’s knockout punchIt got harder for Comilla in the 18th over as Buttler and Samuels fell to Ravi Bopara. Buttler gave a catch to deep midwicket before Samuels, who struck a six off the fifth ball, fell in the last ball of the over – caught at short fine-leg for a sluggish 27 off 30 balls. Udana gave away just eight runs in the penultimate over, which included Saifuddin’s wicket following which Rubel removed Hasan, Mahedi Hasan and Al-Amin in the last over to bowl Comilla out for 156.

Sri Lanka 'keen' to visit Pakistan for T20s in September

Pakistan could be on the verge of hosting their highest-profile international visitor in the last eight years, with Sri Lanka considering a visit for a T20 in September-October

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Aug-20172:21

Maharoof: SL players might have doubts touring Pakistan

Pakistan could be on the verge of hosting their highest-profile international visitor in the last eight years, with Sri Lanka all but committing to play a T20 there in September or October. This would, in itself, represent an extraordinary gesture by SLC, given its own side had been the target of the 2009 terror attack that stopped international cricket being played in Pakistan for six years. Since that attack, in which six policemen and two civilians were killed, only Zimbabwe have toured the country, playing five internationals in Lahore in 2015.Sri Lanka and Pakistan are due to play each other in a full series that starts at the end of September. An SLC release said that “Sri Lanka will play at least one of the three T20s in Lahore, in September,” so long as “the logistical and operational plans fall in place”.Speaking at the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) AGM in Colombo on Saturday, SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala appealed for Asian unity, and cited Pakistan’s willingness to tour Sri Lanka during the island’s own civil war as reason to play in Lahore.”I am keen to take my team to Pakistan,” Sumathipala said. “We have had our security experts visit and make an assessment, and things look positive with things improving all over the country and especially Lahore being cleared. We have three T20 games coming up against Pakistan in September and we would like to play at least one of those games in Lahore.”I call upon each one of you as members to play your role and give Pakistan the security of your support. There is always risk – there were two attacks in London during the Champions Trophy – but cricket continued under the security assurances of the ICC, so likewise we too must be as accommodating and understanding as possible with our members and extend our fullest support to them as the cricketing family of Asia.”Despite Sumathipala’s eagerness, it is not clear yet how Sri Lanka’s players will react to the prospect of playing in Pakistan. Out of the squad that was attacked in Lahore, only Chamara Kapugedara stands a chance of being selected for future T20s, but other players will also have heard the details of that attack from team-mates who had lived through it. Many are likely to have reservations. Thilan Samaraweera, who was shot in the thigh during the attack, has spoken about the trauma the incident had inflicted upon him and his family. Other former players have also spoken of it as being one of the darkest days of their lives. The PCB, meanwhile, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that preparations to host Sri Lanka will begin now. “The SLC president and I had very fruitful talks on the sidelines of the ACC meet in Colombo on Auguest 11 and 12,” PCB chairman Najam Sethi said. “I am grateful for his decision to support our efforts to bring international cricket back to Pakistan. We shall start preparations to stage one or two T20 matches in October in Lahore. This is a historic decision. Once Sri Lanka have toured Pakistan, the door will be open for safe passage of other teams to Pakistan.”When and whether the game – or games – goes ahead will also depend on how a planned series between Pakistan and a World XI side pans out. The status of that World XI tour – currently scheduled to be played between September 10 and 16 – is still uncertain, and dependent on the political situation in Lahore in September. The scenario has been complicated by the recent dismissal of Nawaz Sharif as prime minister; because of this, a very significant by-election is due to take place on September 17 – one day after the last World XI series is due to be played. A high-profile series so close to an election is likely to stretch security resources in the city. The Punjab government has had multiple meetings with PCB officials and, according to PCB chairman Najam Sethi, are agreed about the dates subject to a go-ahead from the province’s chief minister Shehbaz Sharif (brother of Nawaz). Punjab’s law minister Rana Sana Ullah has confirmed that the government is determined to host the series.Sumathipala’s optimism is also indication that a deal has been reached. With both boards and various governments keen for the match to be played in Lahore, player protestations – if there are any – may not be enough to halt that political will.

Babar's ton, Malik's 81 take Pakistan 1-0 up

Pakistan reasserted their dominance in the UAE with a crushing win in Dubai over a Sri Lanka side that has seen ODI wins excruciatingly hard to come by in 2017

The Report by Danyal Rasool13-Oct-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details AFP

Pakistan reasserted their dominance in the UAE with a crushing win in Dubai over a Sri Lanka side that has seen ODI wins excruciatingly hard to come by in 2017. A century from Babar Azam – back playing his most favoured format – and a blistering 81 from Shoaib Malik saw Pakistan set Sri Lanka a stiff target of 293. They were never really in the chase, losing half the side for 67, with Rumman Raees and Hasan Ali leading the 83-run rout and handing them their eighth consecutive loss in the format.Upul Tharanga won the toss and opted to bowl when most – Sarfraz included – considered fielding under the scorching Dubai an unappealing prospect. But Sri Lanka’s opening bowlers Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Gamage backed up their captain with a stellar opening spell, characterised by subtle swing and consistent line and lengths that deprived Pakistan of scoring opportunities. Ahmed Shehzad fell in what is becoming increasingly predictable fashion, getting bogged down by 11 dot balls, before coming down the wicket to Gamage and gifting midwicket a simple catch. It wasn’t until Babar, who had managed to hang in despite struggling for rhythm, and the street-smart Malik came together, that the momentum took a clear shift in Pakistan’s favour. The running between the wickets was excellent, and Malik was destructive when he decided to take the aerial route, with even the tricky Dhananjaya rendered ineffective towards the close of the innings. The bowling looked particularly toothless as Babar and Malik set themselves up for the finish, even if they were unable to come up with the sort of power-hitting the innings required at that stage. For their part, Sri Lanka were superb in the field, in stark contrast to the series against India, with fielders in the infield throwing themselves around and saving several runs. It wasn’t until the last six overs that the big runs really began to leak, but along with it came regular wickets that stymied Pakistan’s charge in the slog overs. Where once 300 looked a formality, Pakistan ended up scrambling to reach 292.Even so, the target was a formidable one, and Sri Lanka began with a clear, positive intent. Upul Tharanga and Niroshan Dickwella sought to take advantage of the Powerplay in a way Pakistan had not, hitting five fours in the first 19 balls. But from the moment the first wicket fell, Dickwella poking at a ball from Raees that nipped away from him, the rot set in. The run rate began to drop sharply; just five runs were scored off the next 24 deliveries. Raees was the most menacing and accounted for Dinesh Chandimal’s wicket too, the ball swinging back into the right-hander and trapping him plumb in front.Tharanga looked thoroughly unconvincing once Mohammad Hafeez came on, surviving numerous lbw appeals in a phase when the middle of his bat completely disappeared from the game. After being worked over for a couple of overs, the Sri Lanka captain was put out of his misery by Hafeez with a ball that skidded on and thudded into his off stump. Two overs later, Hasan Ali dismissed Kusal Mendis and Milinda Siriwardana off successive deliveries, effectively putting the game to bed.The lower order hung around long enough to seriously frustrate Pakistan, without really having a hope of winning. Thisara Perera provided brief entertainment before top-edging Shadab Khan and holing out, substitute fielder Faheem Ashraf taking an excellent catch. Raees came back into the attack and ended the resistance of the last recognised batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, who top-scored with 53.Where Pakistan might have expected to skittle the tail out cheaply, Dananjaya and Jeffrey Vandersay, the Nos. 8 and 9, viewed the situation as an opportunity to get batting practice. While they never showed any intent of even trying to reach the target, they grittily hung around for a 68-run partnership, ensuring Sri Lanka batted out their full fifty overs.Dananjaya ended up with an unbeaten fifty as the game meandered along for a full two hours. Pakistan seemed content to bowl out the overs than look to finish with a flourish. Even so, by the time Pakistan inevitably took a 1-0 lead, all Dananjaya and Vandersay had done was sprinkle some respectability onto another abject white-ball performance from Sri Lanka.

‘Great to be part of a young, exciting team’ – Dravid

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed team mentor of Delhi Daredevils. Dravid will head a refurbished coaching bench at Daredevils, who have also hired former South Africa and India assistant coach Paddy Upton as head coach.Dravid and Upton will work with a team of assistants: Zubin Bharucha (technical director), former India batsmen Sridharan Sriram and Praveen Amre (batting coaches), and former Tamil Nadu and India fast bowler TA Sekhar (bowling consultant).”I am very excited by the challenge of taking Delhi Daredevils on to the next level. From what I have seen I have been impressed by the ambition and energy demonstrated by the team and I look forward to working with a group of players that I believe have what it takes to succeed,” Dravid said.”Along with the rest of the support staff, I am fully aware of what this franchise means to its supporters and I intend to do everything possible to help build a team that the fans can be proud of.”The franchise was forced to ring in changes to the coaching staff once former South Africa batsman and coach Gary Kirsten’s three-year contract was terminated after two seasons. Under Kirsten, who took charge in September 2013, Daredevils finished bottom of the table in IPL 2014 and second from the bottom last year. Daredevils also axed Kirsten’s assistant Rob Walters, who was the trainer.Incidentally, the trio of Dravid, Upton and Bharucha were part of the core team at Rajasthan Royals, which has been suspended for two seasons by the Lodha Committee. In 2014, having served as captain in previous seasons, Dravid assumed the role of team director cum mentor at Royals. In the 28 matches Dravid oversaw, the franchise won 13 matches and lost 12, with two ties and one no result. One of the most sought after coaches in the T20 format, Upton recently won the Big Bash League with Sydney Thunder, before also coaching Lahore Qalandars in the inaugural Pakistan Super League.”I relish the privilege to work again with Rahul and Zubin, and to have the opportunity to do so at a franchise like Delhi Daredevils,” Upton said. “I am constantly learning about the Twenty20 format as I move around the world, and look forward to applying and furthering this knowledge at the coming IPL season with Delhi.”
